Submitted by Bernabe Vazquez on July 30, 2013

54At Bayshore Cosmetic Surgery, we feel strongly about creating a solid plan for healing. This is something that should be in place before you have your procedure to ensure that you create the best possible environment for optimum healing.

Dr. Bernabe Vazquez, our board certified cosmetic surgeon, will talk with you about the healing process, what to expect, and how to enjoy the easiest possible recovery. With the right protocols in place, you will be able to maintain the excellent result that you deserve.

At Bayshore Cosmetic Surgery, we have five main after-surgery tips that we feel are essential:

1. Planning a well balanced diet that is implemented before your procedure, during recovery, and as a life plan.

Having a surgical procedure is the perfect time to change your eating habits and to adopt a lifestyle change. Your recovery will be speedier with a healthy diet filled with nutritious foods and a balanced menu. Your immune system is boosted when you incorporate plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, so essential for healing and maintaining health. With a balanced diet you will feel better physically, emotionally, and mentally. Because surgery and medication can cause constipation, incorporating these foods and lots of water for hydration is essential for keeping the system cleansed.

Make sure you have plenty of soft foods on hand for right after surgery, as heavy meals will not be appealing. Smoothies and soups are ideal, and will help to offset any nausea. We will consult with you regarding appropriate nutrition and to answer any questions you may have.

2. Allowing enough downtime for recovery.

This means letting your boss know that you will be taking off from work and letting your family know that they need to fill in for you during your recovery process. Advise friends and family so that they can help you with what you need, like going to the bathroom, shopping, cooking, pet care, taking medications, putting on compresses, and the like.

3. Make sure you keep things stress free, with no overexertion, as rest is the most essential ingredient in a good recovery.

Create a peaceful atmosphere and ask your family to contribute to this. Keep calming music nearby to create an atmosphere conducive to the harmony you need.

4. Follow the advice of your doctor to the tee.

Don’t take medications that aren’t prescribed. Don’t stop taking your prescriptions without the consent of the doctor, as they are essential to your particular healing process. At Bayshore Cosmetic Surgery we are mindful to not over-prescribe medication, so you will be getting only what you absolutely need.

Do not exercise or exert yourself until your doctor says you can. Over-activity can jeopardize the healing process by causing swelling or bleeding.

5. Make sure have all that you need before go in for surgery

Go shopping for your groceries, ice compresses, and necessary medications before you go for surgery. Make sure you have your bed made comfortably and the house is clean and ready for your return home.
