Social Media and Other Motivations for Plastic Surgery
Submitted by Bernabe Vazquez on August 22, 2014
It is time to accept a hard truth: our society is constantly driven to focus on looks. This is even more apparent due to the popularity of social media. Online, we are always trying to look our best and to show others that we are important. The downfall: social media causes us to relive our younger years, during which we cared so much about what others thought of us. This need to look our best online has driven an increase in plastic surgery, as society looks for ways to look better in Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook photos.
If you think back to just a few years ago, had you ever heard of a selfie? Likely not! A selfie is a photo that someone takes of themselves while enjoying a wonderful meal, a stunning destination or a fun party. These pictures are usually taken at a close distance, which accentuates the face rather than other parts of the body.
Selfies have become extremely popular, and it is hard to scroll through any social media profile without seeing hundreds of these pictures. More and more people are now being judged by these pictures; this is causing them to consider plastic surgery as a way to improve their looks. We all have features we dislike—why not alter these features to boost self confidence?
Selfies Causing Increase in Facial Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgeons are seeing an increase in visits from those looking to improve their looks on social media. In fact, a recent study showed that 1 out of 3 plastic surgeons indicated that patients were asking for procedures based on improving their looks on social media. Plastic surgeons point to an increased number of photos being shared on social media websites and applications as a reason that some are looking to plastic surgery.
Other Motivations for Plastic Surgery
Aside from social media, there are other driving factors behind those looking to undergo a cosmetic procedure. These motivations include:
- Patients want to look younger for professional reasons – With the super competitive job market, people are looking for ways to appear younger in the workplace. While most large companies say that age discrimination does not exist, too many employees have experienced it first hand.
- Correct a certain feature they have never liked – Plastic surgery allows patients to correct a feature that they have been ashamed during any point in their lifetime. Procedures can empower patients to have a new lease on life; having a procedure completed to improve this hang up can be a freeing experience for patients.
