Will a Breast Reduction Alleviate Back Pain?

Submitted by Bernabe Vazquez on May 27, 2014

8When people talk about cosmetic surgery for women, their minds almost always race to breast enlargement or anything else related to enhancing how they look, while glossing over the details of how their ideal appearance will make them physically feel.

However, breast augmentation is every bit as worth having an honest discussion over.  And appearances are hardly the only reason to have that discussion either.  A breast reduction procedure may have potential health benefits, primarily in regards to back pain.

Why Get a Breast Reduction?

As women age, and often gain weight, their breasts increase in size and weight. This affects their postures, which, in turn, creates shoulder neck and back pain, and can even cut off blood flow.

A breast reduction procedure may be able to significantly improve your quality of life.

What is the Procedure of Breast Reduction?

After the patient is placed under anesthesia, an incision is made around the areola, the colored area around the nipple. More specifically, the incision involves a three-part method where incisions are made around the areola, vertically to the crease underneath the breast, and often horizontally beneath the breast following the natural crease.  Excessive tissue and fat will be removed from the side and bottom area of the breasts.  Then, the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position, to prevent the skin from sagging or looking stretched out after the surgery. The areola is also reduced in size.

From there, patients typically spend the night recovering.  Post-operative care involves little more than temporarily wearing a surgical bra. Patients normally don’t experience much pain and recommended medication usually doesn’t go past taking Tylenol for two or three days.

What are the Risks?

Nevertheless, even if there are legitimate health reasons to undergo breast reduction surgery, the procedure carries its own set of health risks.  As with all surgeries, breast reduction can lead to infections, blood loss and loss of normal sensation. Furthermore, depending on how the operation is performed, it could affect your ability to produce breast milk, according to recent studies.  These potential dangers must also be weighed in making the choice in whether or not to undergo a breast reduction.
