Breast Surgery Options, Part 2 - Breast Lift Surgery

For more than a decade, breast surgery continues to be among the most requested plastic surgery procedures in America. Each year, around a half million people elect to undergo cosmetic surgery for a breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction, or breast reconstruction.

Dr. Bernabe Vazquez — one of South Florida’s most experienced board certified plastic surgeons — has more than three decades of safe surgical experience performing breast procedures. We discussed what’s involved with breast reduction surgery in our last blog. Here, we’re taking a closer look at another common plastic surgery procedure for breasts — a breast lift.

What is a Breast Lift?

Over time, any number of factors can cause breasts to sag, flatten, or change their shape. Gravity, pregnancy, aging, and weight fluctuations are often the culprit behind these transformations. Breast lift surgery can correct these issues, rejuvenate the breasts, and restore a more youthful perkiness to the breasts.

During breast lift surgery, the plastic surgeon will reshape and contour breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue.  Additionally, nipple size and shape can also be adjusted during this time, as this is often an incision site in the procedure.

Breast Lift Surgery , A Breast Surgery Option

Is This Surgery Right for Me?

You are a good candidate for a breast lift if …

  • Breasts have flattened and become elongated
  • Nipples fall below the breast crease when unsupported
  • Your nipples and areolas point downward
  • Skin is stretched and areolas are enlarged
  • One breast hangs lower than the other
  • You are in good health, and maintain a stable weight

Recovering from Breast Lift Surgery

The recovery period is similar for most breast surgery procedures. Post-surgery, you will wrap your breats with gauze dressings. Patients are expected to wear a sturdy support bra or elastic breast bandage to reduce swelling and support the breasts as they heal. The plastic surgeon will place a small drainage tube under the skin to allow any fluids that may collect to be drained. Before heading home, you’ll be given instructions for your recovery period, and scheduled for a follow up appointment with your surgeon.
