Rhinoplasty (Nose Job) in Miami
The nose has long been thought of as the central feature of the face. It should come as no surprise, then, that many people who are unhappy with the look of their nose choose to undergo rhinoplasty (nose surgery). Rhinoplasty is the reshaping and resizing of the nose for a more attractive appearance. Dr. Bernabe Vazquez, a board certified plastic surgeon who has served the Miami area for over 30 years, offers rhinoplasty to bring balance to a patient’s facial features, which in turn helps improve their self-confidence.
What Can Rhinoplasty Correct?
Dr. Vazquez can provide a subtle or dramatic change to restore balance and harmony to a patient’s facial features. Rhinoplasty can correct:
- An oversized, crooked or wide nose
- A nasal tip that is bulbous, droopy or upturned
- Uneven or oversized nostrils
- A bump on the bridge of the nose
- Structural defects (e.g., deviated septum) that causes breathing problems
If you are bothered by the appearance of your nose and are in good physical and psychological health, you may be a suitable candidate for rhinoplasty.
Your Initial Rhinoplasty Consultation
The initial consultation is a detailed process that involves a careful examination of your nasal anatomy and a discussion of your goals to develop a treatment plan that meets your needs. Dr. Vazquez may ask you to look in a mirror and point out exactly what you would like to see improved. This will help him understand your expectations and determine whether they can realistically be achieved.
In order to bring balance to your overall facial appearance, Dr. Vazquez may recommend other plastic surgery procedures in conjunction with rhinoplasty. For example, he may recommend chin surgery to make it either more or less prominent and to help complement the results of rhinoplasty.
What to Expect During Rhinoplasty
There are two surgical approaches to rhinoplasty. With the open technique, Dr. Bernabe Vazquez makes the incision on the strip of skin separating the nostrils, also known as the columella, and separates the skin from the underlying tissue. This technique gives the doctor better visibility during the procedure, but typically requires a longer recovery period and may leave a small visible scar.
With the closed technique, Dr. Vazquez places the incisions within the nostrils. This technique does not leave any visible scars and allows for a quicker recovery period. However, the doctor has less visibility and control than he does with the open approach.
With both approaches, Dr. Vazquez uses the incision to access the supporting structures of the nose, which is comprised of bone and cartilage. He is then able to reduce, augment or sculpt the bone and cartilage to improve the width, shape or angle of the nose. Dr. Vazquez will close the incisions with stitches and place bandages. A splint may also be placed to support the nose’s new structure and promote proper healing.
Recovering From Rhinoplasty
Following surgery, you should plan to take one to two weeks off from work or your regular routine to allow your nose to heal properly. Your nose may be swollen, sore or bruised for the first few days, but these symptoms will gradually improve within about 10 days. To promote quick and proper healing, it is recommended you keep your head elevated, including when sleeping, during the first week after surgery.
