Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) in Miami
The eyes are one of the first features people notice about us. Unfortunately as time passes, the skin loses its elasticity, muscle tone is lost and fat is displaced, causing the skin on the upper eyelids to droop or sag, and puff or swell on the lower eyelids. This in turn, can create an older-looking and tired appearance. In some cases, heavy eyelids can droop so low that a person’s vision is compromised.
Dr. Bernabe Vazquez, a talented and experienced plastic surgeon serving the Miami area, offers eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) for patients who seek to correct sagging, drooping eyelids or puffy bags underneath the eyes. The procedure restores youth to the eyes for a brighter, rejuvenated appearance.
Am I a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
You may be a suitable candidate for eyelid surgery if:
- You have droopy, sagging upper and/or lower eyelids
- You have puffiness below the eyes
- You experience frequent irritation from excess folds of skin on the eyelids
While most patients are 35 or older, you may decide to undergo eyelid surgery at a younger age if droopy, baggy eyelids run in your family. Additionally, you should be in good overall health and have no serious eye conditions. Before choosing to undergo the procedure, it is important to understand the procedure’s limitations. The procedure cannot remove crow’s feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark under-eye circles, or lift sagging eyebrows. If you seek to correct any of these issues, Dr. Vazquez will gladly discuss with you other facial rejuvenation options, such as facelift or brow lift, that can be performed in conjunction with eyelid surgery.
What Can I Expect During Eyelid Surgery?
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and can be used to treat the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. If Dr. Vazquez is treating both, he will begin with the upper eyelids. The doctor will make incisions along the creases of the upper eyelids and remove fatty tissue and excess skin. He will reshape and tighten the remaining skin for a firmer appearance. Dr. Vazquez will then close the incision with stitches.
For the lower eyelids, Dr. Vazquez can use one of two incision techniques. He can make the incision just below the lower lash line to remove any excess skin and fat. The second technique involves making the incision inside the lower eyelid. Excess fat is eliminated, but no skin is removed.
What is the Recovery Like?
For the first few days after surgery, the area around the upper and/or lower eyelids may be swollen or bruised. With proper care, these symptoms should improve within two weeks of surgery. Any scars from the incisions should also fade over time. Sutures placed on the treatment areas will be removed about five days after surgery during a follow-up appointment. Patients should anticipate taking one to two weeks off from work or their normal routine and avoid strenuous activity to promote proper healing.
