Commitment is required on the part of the patient to allow the body to heal through the use of proper nutrition, rest and movement. With time, the body will heal and the entire effects of the surgery can be fully appreciated. Swelling and bruising are very common side effects of surgery and with the proper care; the healing process will bring the body back into a state of balance.

Doctor’s Orders

Your surgeon will have specific recommendations for pre and post surgery. Pre-surgical procedures may include adding supplements to improve immune function. Vitamin C, zinc, probiotics and amino acids may be prescribed prior to surgery to aid in healing and minimize scar formation. Some post surgical recommendations may include certain foods because their properties will aid in the healing process. Bromelain found in pineapples is known to reduce swelling and bruising. Quercetin, found in apples, citrus fruit and leafy green vegetables has anti-oxidant and anti- inflammatory properties.

The Importance of Fluids

Surgical procedures require anesthesia and undoubtedly, this confluence of medications may disrupt the ability to feel much like oneself. It is important to drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated and to assist with the removal of waste matter from the surgical site. R-I-C-ETo control the inflammatory response to surgery, doctors will remind their patients of the importance of Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation to manage pain, discomfort and bruising. Proper rest enables the body to recover without additional stress or strain. The use of ice placed on or near the surgical site for fifteen to twenty minutes on and removed for twenty minutes helps to reduce the inflammatory response and the pain from the heat that is generated at the site. Compression reduces the swelling that may occur right after surgery. Elevation aims to reduce the swelling as well as assist with waste product removal from the area.

Stress Free

Maintain a stress free recuperation period by including healthy expectations, a solid support system and stress management through the use of visualization or meditation.

Walking as early as the day of surgery is recommended to get the circulation going and to bring the body back into balance. Your surgeon will provide proper information regarding specific exercises and movement suited for your recovery.
